Somerville Local First’s Harvest Fest: Not Your Mama’s Non-Profit Gala

Somerville Local First Harvest Fest

I’ve always been a big fan of Fall. Aside from prepping myself for the Fightins’ guaranteed October baseball appearance while Red Sox nation weeps, I’ve been digging the air-conditioning free nights and noshing on the fresh apples from my Enterprise Farms farm share. As a Somerville local I’ve also been bracing myself for one of the coolest events of the season – Somerville Local First’s 2nd annual Harvest Fest on October 9th.

This year it’s Rock n’ Roll vs. Electronic. Get your rock on during the day in the 1st session with a smattering of local bands and foods – a definite must go-to event for any craft beer jugheads (or is that growler heads?) out there. At the night session David Day and the Zebbler Encanti Experience will summon you to cut the floor at the Armory with your dancing shoes. Food, music, lights, fun – all local and all for a great cause to support the hard working folks at SLF.

So what the hell are you waiting for?

Somerville Open Studios 2010: It’s OK to Talk to Strangers

Aside from Halloween there’s only one other occasion I can think of where it’s perfectly acceptable to approach a stranger’s home. And what is that occasion you may ask? Somerville Open Studios! Yes, it’s that time of year again where the hundreds of artists scattered about the fine city of Somerville, Massachusetts open their homes to let the general public view their work. This upcoming weekend will be my first time being around for open studios in S-ville and I’m really excited about it. Just within a few blocks of my home there will be a dozen artists to check out. I’m thinking of this as not only an opportunity to show support for the local art scene, but also a chance to really get to know some people I wouldn’t have otherwise met in my community. I’ll probably be doing most of my rounds Saturday early evening and early afternoon on Sunday. Can’t wait!
